Environmental Advocacy in Central New York: How are local advocates for sustainability and environmental responsibility influencing change in the region?

Program Description

Please join us for our annual Advocacy Event on Saturday, September 16th in Ithaca, New York.

Central New York has an active advocacy community with a record of success in influencing public policy and providing examples of sustainable living that have had influence far beyond the region. In conjunction with Liz Walker, Executive Director of EcoVillage at Ithaca, this event will engage local activists and public officials to speak about their successes in advocating for sustainability and environmental responsibility and influencing change in the region.

EcoVillage at Ithaca (EVI) is a 175-acre, planned cohousing community with 100 residences clustered on the site in three, five-acre neighborhoods. Built sequentially over nearly 20 years, each neighborhood is a housing cooperative that supports the EVI community’s goals of sustainability, accessibility, and affordability.

Keynote Speaker | Sandra Steingraber

An acclaimed ecologist and author, Sandra Steingraber explores the links between human rights and the environment, with a focus on chemical contamination, climate changes, and shale gas extraction via fracking. She brings a clear, lyrical voice to the complex evidence of biology and takes a personal as well as scientific look at these issues, offering insights into how we can protect our environment and our communities. Steingraber will be speaking on her advocacy efforts in the Finger Lakes region related to shale gas fracking and storage.

Sandra will take a look at fossil fuels as a design flaw and explore how landscape architects can simultaneously address the climate emergency and catalyze the transition to a carbon-free future.
