Come with us to uncover the charming fisherman’s village of Tai O, you’ll gain a fascinating insight into the real Hong Kong, away from the glittering skyscrapers and hectic streets. One of Lantau’s best-preserved locations, predominantly due to the efforts of its proud local population, this enchanting community perches atop wooden stilts where the Pearl River Delta meets the South China Sea; its strong seafaring culture intrinsically linked to its geography.
From Tai O village, we will hit the side streets, uncovering treasured traditions, forgotton trades and religious beliefs. Step into the stilted home at Triple Lanterns, run by the enigmatic Julia, who will provide drinks for a small donation. From there we willl board a small boat for a close-up look at what life is like living on the water.
Leaving our boat, we will head to the imposing Tai O Heritage Hotel. Formerly the local police station during Hong Kong’s time under British colonial rule, the building was converted to a hotel in 2013, and has many a fascinating tale to tell.
After all that exploration, we will have worked up an appetite, which means that it is time for lunch at Hoi Wan Vegetarian Restaurant (the name is a little misleading as it has both a vegetarian and regular kitchen - it is actually quite famous for its crispy chicken!) The set meal includes minimum three dishes with tea.
And for those who would like to make a full day of it, there is a optional to visit the secret Tai O infinity pool for a cool down and some rest and relaxation for a long day. We will hire a boat to take us there and back. The pool is on two levels, and we would recommend staying at the lower one for your own safety. Please note there are no changing facilities at the pool.
Tour will begin by catching the 9:25am ferry (weekdays) or 10:00am ferry (weekends) from Tung Chung New Development pier. Please arrive early, this is a public ferry and is first come, first serve only.
