Event description

Description

This workshop is intended to help 2nd-tier service-learning students continue to think critically about their role in community during their service-learning experience. The purpose is to help Tulane students of all backgrounds explore ethical approaches to community engagement, including some of the ways in which power, privilege and identity shape their experience.

  • Participants will have an opportunity to explore and share best practices for working with communities with a more in-depth understanding of how power, privilege and identity can shape relationships.

  • Participants will understand common manifestations of the savior complex and other harmful practices in community engagement, including the power dynamics involved in service.

  • Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm solutions and responses to common issues related to power, privilege and identity in service.

*Workshops with 8 RSVP's or less will be rescheduled.

Contact Ben Brubaker (bbrubake@tulane.edu) with any questions.

The Entering Communities (2nd Tier) workshop is designed for 2nd-tier service learning courses, 3000 level and above. If you have not participated in a service-learning class yet, we encourage you to attend a "1st Tier" workshop.
