Event description

Description

With aging and broken voting machines, legislative districts drawn to protect incumbents, and political campaigns awash in secret contributions, South Carolina voters sometimes question whether their votes matter. How can we improve our election system and restore public confidence?

Come hear experts define these issues, learn how citizens can equip themselves to demand fair election systems and practices, and ask your questions to our distinguished panel:

Representative Peter M. McCoy, Jr., S.C. House, District 115; Chair, House Judiciary Committee

Joseph L. Debney, Director of Elections, Charleston County

Dr. Duncan Buell, Professor of Computer Science, University of South Carolina; nationally-recognized expert on voting technology and security

Lynn Teague, Vice President, Issues and Action, League of Women Voters of SC

In the next year South Carolina will purchase a new voting system to replace the current decades-old system. How do we advocate for a system that will ensure secure, accurate, re-countable, transparent and verifiable elections?

Also, learn how proposed legislation would put an independent committee in charge of redrawing district lines, instead of politicians drawing the lines and choosing their voters, resulting in gerrymandering.
