Training Objectives:

  • Discuss the epidemiologic impacts of substance dependence in the pregnant patient 
  • Review the importance of addressing substance dependence in pregnancy relative to health care initiatives and patient care
  • Identify literature review findings for addressing the problem and the use of enhanced recovery as a solution to the problem of substance dependence in the parturient
  • Describe an approach to address the needs of substance dependent parturients involved with acute pain of surgery and labor 
  • Identify outcome measures that demonstrate success in combating substance dependence in the parturient
  • Discuss the impact of collaborate care through early screening, intervention and referrals to combat the problem of substance dependence in the pregnant patients 

Cost:

$10 for 1.5 CEUs (pending approval). Please provide payment at the training. Proceeds will go to presenters and to support future Consilience Institute community events.

Presenter Bio:

Brock is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at Benefis Health Systems in Great Falls and at the VA Medical Center located at Fort Harrison. He grew up in Avon and Deer Lodge Montana before attending college.  He attained a BSN from Montana State University in 1994 prior to entry into the Army.  While serving in the Army, he attended the U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing while completing his Masters in Anesthesia Nursing from UT Houston - Health Science Center. In 2001, Brock received the Agatha Hodgins and James Temo awards for the top graduate recognition in his class. While in the Army, Brock served in several capacities during Operation Iraqi freedom and Chief, Anesthesia Services. After leaving the Army in 2005, he worked at Madigan Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington and received awards for his role as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor for the Army’s CRNA program.  Brock and his family returned to Montana in 2010 and he recently Re-Commissioned into the U.S. Army Reserves.  He is currently enrolled in the Gonzaga University - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.  His ongoing efforts include working with the Benefis Health Systems Foundation and the Montana Health Care Foundation aiding in the work to address substance dependency issues in the parturient. Brock enjoys all aspects of anesthesia practice. In his free time, Brock can be found in most outdoor activities with his family.
