Event description

Description

This event launches the toolkit, EngagingSmartCities. Presenting examples of good practice, this toolkit helps smart city creators from tech, government and the third sector to avoid inadvertent exclusion in the smart city. In this way, the toolkit aims to increase equality and widen participation in smart city projects.

This toolkit is designed for smart city practitioners and is based on two years of academic research from the Smart Cities in the Making (SCiM) project. Run between the Open University and the University of Oxford, SCiM was a two year programme which looked at how smart and digital technologies affect social difference in the city. Using Milton Keynes as its case study, it looked across the various ways MK is getting smarter: its citizens, its government, its data, its visuals and its businesses. To develop our understanding, our team of eight researchers did interviews, made observations, and analysed documents.

Following opening words from Geoff Snelson, Director of Strategy and Futures at Milton Keynes Council, we will briefly introduce the toolkit and summarise key action points for practitioners.

There will be plenty of time for networking, with wine and soft drinks available.
