Engaging with the Humanities – Peter Frankopan

Global change in the 21st century: Time for a fresh look at the Past, Present and Future.

Wednesday 9 March 2016, 12:30-14:00

The world is changing: from dramatic changes in the distribution of global GDP to the US ‘pivot’ to Asia, from turbulence in the Middle East to disruption in Russia, from a new era of commodity prices to shocks to the financial system, the early 21st century seems unfamiliar, volatile and unpredictable.

As Peter argues in his new book The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, the world’s centre of gravity is shifting – and has been for the last hundred years. In fact, it is returning to where it lay for millennia - in the heart of Asia.

More about the speaker:

Peter is Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford and Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research. He works on the history of Asia Minor and the Caucasus, Russia, the Middle East, Central Asia and China.

His recent book, The Silk Roads: A New History of the World is a Sunday Times Bestseller, Evening Standard #1 and topped the non-fiction charts in India. It was named as one of the Books of the Year by the Daily Telegraph; The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian; The Observer; the TLS; History Today; Bloomberg Business’ and Prosper Magazine. And it was named Daily Telegraph History Book of the Year 2015.

Peter studied at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and has had visiting fellowships at Dumbarton Oaks (Harvard) and at Princeton. He has lectured at many of the world’s leading universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, NYU, LSE & Cambridge and regularly writes for the national and international press about history, the global economy, and contemporary affairs.

Please arrive at the School from 12:15. Lunch will be served from 12:30 with the talk starting promptly at 13:00.

Tickets are non-transferable.
