Description

Recalibrating Schoolwide Discipline and Student Support: Building a Restorative and Accountable Approach

Students, teachers, administrators, and district leaders all over the country are seeking to create innovative plans for reducing discipline problems in schools. With secondary school principals playing leading roles, these stakeholders are seeking alternatives to ineffective and inequitable disciplinary policies and practices that result in the use, overuse, and disproportional use of punitive exclusionary sanctions that adversely impact students. Most educators aspire to help students develop the habits and skills of self-management, self-discipline, and social and emotional efficacy. However, the gap between these goals and current realities is often great, the strategies for creating change are not clear, and the core elements of a different approach are not evident.

This one-day institute is designed for district leaders and school leaders including principals, other administrators, student support team members (counselors, social workers, psychologists, and special education coordinators) and teacher leaders. Participants will address this essential question: What needs to be understood, believed, refined, and implemented in order to establish an effective schoolwide discipline and student support model?

District leaders and school teams will:

  • Develop an integrated vision of Schoolwide Discipline and Student Support as a system with essential elements that support an effective model.

  • Understand the role of school climate and culture in a discipline and student support model.

  • Explore the qualities of an accountable and restorative model.

  • Learn the components of an effective system of discipline and student support.

  • Think together about a school’s vision (mission, beliefs, and values) and how it provides direction for a schoolwide discipline and student support model.

  • Explore and prioritize schoolwide initiatives that will become part “of the culture” and create an improved school climate.

  • Discuss the teacher mindsets and classroom practices that build engaging and well-managed classrooms; align with an accountable and restorative approach to schoolwide discipline and student support; and ensure every student to academically succeed in school.

  • Apply learning to a possible sequence of next steps in their home school or district to build a more restorative and accountable approach to schoolwide discipline and student support.
