Share Engaging Schools and Families with Local and Sensitive Histories as a City of Culture

Event Details

This CPD event will focus on the findings of Heritage Learning’s research into engaging school and family audiences with local and sensitive histories, with a particular attention to the impact of being a designated City of Culture. This project has been funded by the GEM YH ReachOut Bursary.

Reaching the end of our City of Culture year, we wanted to see what role heritage and local history had played in Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year in 2007, find out what the lasting impact has been and what lessons we could learn in terms of ensuring a legacy.  In November, two members of Heritage Learning took a trip to Liverpool to observe family and school sessions, visit sites and speak to members of the Education team at Museums Liverpool. More broadly, as a city with many shared histories, we wanted to find out what the approach was to local history engagement and what lessons we could learn from it.

We wanted to use this research to inform our planning of our place-based curriculum Hull Curriculum, our schools provision generally as well as our programming for families.

The agenda will cover the following questions:

  • What we observed and discovered
  • Our key take away messages
  • How we plan to move forward with our findings
  • Tour of Wilberforce House

The day will be delivered through a mixture of informal presentations and group discussion/activities.

There will be a lunchbreak from 12.30-1.30pm with the option of a post lunch session focusing on learning at WIlberforce House.

Lunch is not provided but there are several cafes and shops nearby.
