The last few challenging years have shown career services professionals that traditional employer outreach is no longer sufficient. Not only have companies scaled back their on-campus recruitment efforts, they are increasingly seeking out alternative points of contact to source the best candidates. In addition, career centers across the country have experienced budget constraints, while at the same time being expected to do more than ever. It has therefore, become increasingly important for career services professionals to spend more time, effort, and resources on identifying and leveraging often overlooked opportunities for partnerships; in particular, parents and alumni.

In its latest strategic plan, the Toppel Career Center at the University of Miami identified five critical focus areas: increased emphasis on experiential education, innovative service delivery, improved integration with academics, increased services for specific populations, and expansion of the Center’s infrastructure.

Through this process, it quickly became apparent that sparking meaningful relationships with parents and alumni is vital to each of these areas. Discover how the Center utilized strategic relationships with parents and alumni, and identify specific programs you can tailor for your campus. The presenter will share intended (and surprising) outcomes from engaging these populations over the last four years. This three-part series will focus on the following key areas that have proven successful for the career center, which can be easily tailored to institutions of all types: tying parents and alumni to the strategic planning process, creating awareness of the career center, providing specific and concrete “how-to” examples of successful programs and initiatives, and demonstrating outcomes related to these efforts.

1) Creating the Framework – Strategic Planning (November 4th at 1:00pm ET)
In Part I, we will discuss the importance of developing a strategy before jumping into relationship building. With so much at stake and oftentimes political implications, it is critical that a well thought out plan is established; spending more time on the front end will help to ensure future success. We will analyze the UM career center’s strategic plan, how and why it was created, as well as how we went about securing campus-wide buy-in (a very important step). In particular, we will discuss how parents and alumni play a key role in the implementation of the strategic plan. Regardless of whether you have a strategic plan or not, you will acquire helpful building blocks to begin a strategic partnership effort with parents and alumni.

2) Key Relationships – Parents (November 6th at 1:00pm ET)
In Part II, we delve right into why and how parents play a key role in career services today. Using the five critical areas from the strategic plan as a framework, participants will develop a clear understanding of how parents touch all parts of what we do as career services professionals. We will discuss actual initiatives that were developed, challenges encountered, and concrete successful outcomes. Participants will have an opportunity to share their experiences – both good and bad – when working with this constituent group.

3) Key Relationships – Alumni (and more) (November 8th at 1:00pm ET)
In the third and final part, the importance of meaningful and intentional alumni partnerships is analyzed. While the notion of alumni partnerships is not new to career services, we will look at it from a holistic point of view, where key institutional departments are critical to the success of forming real and lasting alumni partnerships. As in Part II, the strategic plan will be used as the guiding framework for the discussion, and successes and challenges will be addressed. Finally, to tie everything together, a discussion centered on identifying additional key partnerships and their potential benefits will be had.
