Event description

Description

Teachers, principals, and parents are important partners for ensuring impact for after school programs. This is particularly critical for programs that focus on literacy. Expectations for homework help or completion often eclipse the potential impact of reading and writing practice in an environment where engaging projects can be infused with literacy support that shows impact.

Participants will:
• Assess their programs’ approach to parent and school staff involvement
• Understand how to use best practice literacy strategies with parents
• Develop opportunities for literacy events, such as a Family Literacy Night
• Develop ways to maximize high impact strategies that make a difference in achievement
• Explore ways to develop literacy competencies within existing structured program activities and projects
Target audience: OST Teaching staff, Site Directors, Site Coordinators and Curriculum Specialists serving grades K-6

NAA competencies: 2, 5
DHS Outcomes: Aspires to Educational Excellence, Engagement in Learning, Improved Engagement in School, Prepare for Higher Education and Employment
DHS Indicators: Increase opportunities for problem solving and critical thinking
