Hands on Nature and Science

Nature provides a valuable resource for teachers of young children. Learn how to incorporate music, movement, literature, art and the outdoors to teach science concepts and an appreciation of the environment.

Spend the day in one of Los Angeles’s most pristine Japanese Gardens exploring the wonders of science and nature. Dance, sing, hear stories, create art, and play.  Together we will collect a menu of creative teaching tools that will help you make science fun and cultivate an appreciation for all things green and wild.

Attendees will participate in a series of short activities, and discussions that explore a variety of techniques that demonstrate how to creatively incorporate movement, music, literature and the outdoors when teaching young people about science and the nature.

Michael Fritzen has worked in the informal education field for over 10 years. He has worked at the Natural History Museum of LA County, Los Angeles Zoo, Autry Museum, Wildlife On Wheels, and KidSpace Museum. Currently, he is Head of Family Programs at the Skirball Cultural Center, creating, coordinating, and implementing all the enriching programs for the institution. In his spare time, he serves on the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots committee, as well as the LA environmental education fair board, teaches art programs around Los Angeles, docents at the Los Angeles Zoo, and Chair for Men in Child Care for the California Association for the Education of Young Children.
