Event Details

The New School for Public Engagement’s "Engaged Lives" is a series of conversations with alumni about their lives, work, and New School experience. Paul Loeb is an accomplished author, researcher, lecturer, and alumnus. He has spent over thirty years researching and writing about citizen responsibility and empowerment--asking what makes some people choose lives of social commitment, while others abstain.

He has written five books and lectured at over 400 colleges and universities around the country, inspiring students to get involved in a wide range of community projects. Loeb’s early books include Nuclear Culture, Hope in Hard Times and Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus. His anthology on political hope, The Impossible will Take a Little While was named the #3 political book of that year by the History Channel and the American Book Association, and won the Nautilus Award for best social change book of the year. Loeb’s newly updated Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time (St Martin's Press), which also won a Nautilus Award, explores what it takes to lead a life of social commitment despite all the obstacles.
