Event description

Description

‘The Emergence of Intercultural Youth Groups & Events’ The 3 rd Engage conference will focus on the role and need of intercultural youth groups and services that should be created in an Ireland of Opportunity. There are over 800k people not born in Ireland living in Ireland. Over 400k people are young ethnic minorities. This has led to the natural emergence of ethnic focused youth groups, events and initiatives like the African Students Association Ireland, Indian Youth Ireland, Organisational Pakistan Youth in Ireland, Indian Film Festival, Nigerian Carnival, Brazil meets Bray… etc There are issues of Identity, racism, integration and intercultural learning that directly correlate with that demographic. At present, there are no services being developed or funded to deal with the specialist needs of ethnic focused youth groups and International Students. Most cultural events initiated by ethnic minorities still do not receive any support from the Arts council or support and there is no uniform strategy to tackle the emergence of both the youth groups and events.

The National Youth Council of Ireland in November 2017 published a report a Report called ‘ Making Minority Priority’ focused on challenges of young ethnic minorities in Ireland. The Youth Platform Project has grown to 24 youth groups representing thousands of youth in Ireland. The Engage Conference 2018 is targeted at youth representatives from organisations that are members of the Youth Platform Project and other youth initiatives working or looking to work closely with young ethnic minorities.
