About this event

EnergyPlus for Practitioners (November 30 - December 10)

This workshop focuses on the needs of the energy modeling practitioner in order to get you up to speed and highly productive with EnergyPlus as quickly as possible. We cover the fundamentals of EnergyPlus such as geometry and internal loads while rapidly ramping up to advanced topics such as HVAC systems and controls. We guide you through the complexities of the EnergyPlus syntax, input/output files, documentation, and essential software tools including the Euclid extension for SketchUp. Most importantly, we teach you how to use the available resources to teach yourself going forward. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises are used extensively throughout. By the end of the workshop, you should be comfortable with creating, running, and debugging EnergyPlus models.We have developed our training materials from scratch over a period of several years based on our extensive experience using EnergyPlus to model real-world projects and helping others to do the same. This workshop should be a prerequisite for anyone planning to work with EnergyPlus regardless of what user interface you choose.

This workshop will include 4 webinar sessions to cover lectures and demonstrations, each lasting 2-2.5 hours for a total of~9 hours of webinar training time. We will plan for an extra 30 minutes in each lecture to accommodate questions and other possible delays. The webinar schedule will be as follows (all times in Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00):

  • Webinar 1: Tuesday, November 30

  • Webinar 2: Friday, December 3
    • 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Between webinar sessions, there will be hands-on "homework" exercises assigned to practice topics covered during webinars. Attendees are welcome to ask the instructor questions related to exercises and other training information outside of webinars.

EnergyPlus EMS Controls (December 14 - 17)

This one-day workshop covers the Energy Management System (EMS) capability of EnergyPlus, which allows implementation of custom control strategies and calculation routines that override standard modeling processes within EnergyPlus. We cover the EnergyPlus runtime Language (Erl) that is used to describe the custom control programs, how to create EMS components (sensors, actuators, output variables, etc.), and how to debug execution of EMS programs. Lecture topics include how to create advanced HVAC control sequences, how to override default HVAC operation (flow rate, setpoint temperature, capacity, etc.), how to abort a simulation when operational faults occur, and how to use outputs to generate trend data. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises are used extensively throughout. Previous experience with EnergyPlus is recommended but not required.

What do I need to attend the workshop?

You must use a computer to attend the webinar sessions and perform the hands-on exercises. For the exercises, the Windows operating system is required -- either as your primary system, running as a virtual machine, or using Boot Camp.

 

Can I register for just one webinar session of a workshop?

No. Both workshops have been carefully designed to build on your skills from one webinar session to the next. If you have an unavoidable conflict, you are welcome to register for the full workshop and then only attend the parts that fit your schedule. 

 

Is my registration transferrable to another person?

Yes. Please transfer your registration to the new participant before the workshop by emailing us at training@bigladdersoftware.com.

The name on the registration doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

What is the refund policy?

Full refunds can be issued up to two weeks before the workshop. No refunds can be given after that date.
