Description

Whether you’re thinking of the U.S. Senate or a local school board, come learn the basics of running for elected office: Motivation, Message, Money, and Mechanics. This workshop is nonpartisan, free, and open to the public.

The event features Kathleen Falk, former Gov. Madeleine Kunin, Randy Brock, Sue Minter, Sen. Joe Benning, Ruth Hardy, VLS Profesor Robert Sand, Sarah Buxton, Jim Condos, and Melissa Mulliken.

Agenda:

9:30 am | Registration and coffee

10:00 am | Welcome

10:15 am | Motivation: Panel on "Why run for office?"

11:30 am | Self-reflection at small tables among participants on what might motivate each to run.

12:00 pm | Message: use of polling, literature, TV and radio ads, social media and other methods of getting out your message

12:30 pm | Lunch and Guest Speaker: Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos on legal requirements

1:30 pm | Money: How much to raise, how to raise, help from allies, what staff is needed, reporting required, positive v. negative attacks

2:00 pm | Mechanics: writing a campaign plan, what staff is needed, how to work with allies, "get out the vote" steps

2:30 pm | Panel to wrap up, summarize, and answer questions
