ENEMY OF THE SUN | A Busboys and Poets Books Presentation

Enemy of the Sun is a landmark 1970 anthology co-edited and co-translated by Edmund Ghareeb and Naseer Aruri that showcases Palestinian resistance through poetry. More than literature, it’s a cultural and political declaration, resonating with global movements like the Black Panther Party, which circulated its titular poem after author and activist George Jackson’s death.

The collection fuses art with activism—poetry becomes a tool for consciousness, identity, and justice. The newly released and expanded second edition ensured its enduring relevance, inspiring new generations to engage with themes of dignity, freedom, and resistance.

Featuring voices like Sameeh Al-Qassem and Mahmoud Darwish, the anthology highlights the universal nature of liberation struggles, drawing powerful parallels with African American and Native American activism, among others. Ultimately, Enemy of the Sun affirms literature’s power to transcend borders, build solidarity, and sustain the spirit of resistance.

Edmund Ghareeb is joining us on the Busboys stage to share more about this updated edition for the current generation of activists. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Ghareeb will be signing following the program.

Edmund Ghareeb is an internationally recognized scholar on Iraq, the Kurds, U.S.–Arab relations, Middle Eastern media, and the information revolution in the Arab world.

He has taught at Georgetown, George Washington University, the University of Virginia, and McGill. He was the first Mustafa Barzani Distinguished Scholar at American University, where he taught the first regular courses on Kurdish history, culture, and politics in the U.S.

Ghareeb is the author or co-author of twelve books—including The Kurdish Question in Iraq, War in the Gulf, Split Vision, and The Historical Dictionary of Iraq—as well as numerous articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries.

He has lectured widely in the United States, Europe, the Arab world, Brazil, and Asia. He has served as a reviewer for the UNDP, participated in UN-sponsored conferences, spoken at universities and think tanks worldwide, testified before the U.S. Congress, and is frequently interviewed by American and international media.
