Enemy of the People
A quaint waterside village is set to become the next tourist destination when the town doctor finds deadly contaminants in the local water supply. Will this devastating truth make the scientist a hero or will the messenger be seen as an enemy of the people?
Using theater as a tool for social transformation, Falconworks Artists Group will produce this century old political thriller to engage the community in the ongoing debate about the future of our health and the role our economy in our little waterfront haven.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE SITE:
The performance will take place in an industrial site at Gowanus Bay Terminal (GBX), adjacent to the mouth of the Gowanus Canal. The play will be performed in a workshop that has not been used for several decades. It has a roof but is open to the air.
The performance space has no heat, and is cooled by winds off New York Harbor, especially in the evenings. Please dress extra warmly - it will be cooler at the performance site than at other locations in Red Hook.
Running time of the play will be about two and a half hours. There are restrooms on site and we will have refreshments for sale at intermission.
The theater is handicapped-accessible, but please contact us if you will require special accommodation getting to the site.
We will provide shuttle buses from different points in Red Hook to the performance site itself. You MUST enter the site on a shuttle bus unless you have specifically made other arrangements with us. This means LATECOMERS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED! If you miss the last bus, you will not be able to attend the show.
Buses will leave from the following locations:
- home/made, 293 Van Brunt St (corner of Pioneer) - last bus will leave at 7:35 (evening performances) or 2:35 (matinees)
- Rocky Sullivans, 34 Van Dyke St (corner of Dwight) - last bus will leave at 7:40 (evenings) or 2:40 (matinees)
- The GBX gate, 699 Columbia St (across from the truck parking lot behind IKEA) - last bus will leave at 7:45 (evenings) or 2:45 (matinees)
Buses will return to the same locations after the show.
The MTA's B61 bus passes directly by home/made and Rocky Sullivan's. You can also take the bus or water taxi to IKEA and walk over to the GBX gate. Parking is available on the street near the gate. (Note: Parking may be limited on weekends due to activities in the park.)

Falconworks Artists Group
Falconworks Artists Group is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to empower communities and individuals through theater and applied drama. Founded in 1997 and incorporated in 2004, Falconworks achieves its aims through theater workshops that build our participants' and our community's capacity to analyze systems of oppression in order to effect change.
Falconworks promotes the principles of popular education which include dialogical approach, participant driven content, action/reflection and the goal of transformation.
"I believe that all the truly revolutionary theatrical groups should transfer to the people the means of production in the theater so that the people themselves may utilize them. The theater is a weapon, and it is the people who should wield it."
--Augusto Boal (1931 - 2009)
