“Enemy of the American People” — Why Americans mostly don’t like journalists, and mostly never have-with Wayne Svoboday

Remember Watergate, the mid-1970s time when reporters dismantled Richard Nixon’s presidency and inspired a generation of 22-year-olds to take up journalism as a career? The era was one of the few in American history when a decent number of public figures and private citizens had a good word to say about reporters. More typical have been moments like we are living today, when news consumers from left and right agree on one fact: journalists can’t be trusted. Reporters looking to dodge a blow sometimes say they are doing something right if critics from both side detest them. That kind of self-serving justification is one of the reasons many Americans want to punch reporters. President Trump’s line about how journalists are enemies of the American people, which is an attempted body blow to our craft’s role in American democracy, would have flat-lined had so many people not strongly agreed with him.

In this workshop we will read some things, view some things, and talk about some things. We’ll consider how this distaste came to be and what, if anything, can be done about it in polarized America or even afterward.
