Event Details

Someone is sexually assaulted in the United States every 98 seconds. DNA evidence is vital to attaining justice for victims of these crimes. According to End the Backlog, a program from the Joyful Heart Foundation, when tested, rape kit evidence can identify an unknown assailant, connect crimes together, and indicate serial offenders. It can also confirm the presence of a known suspect, corroborate the survivor's account of the attack, discredit an alleged offender’s account, and exonerate the innocent. Despite the known benefits, untested Rape Kits are a nationwide problem. Human Rights Watch estimates over 400,000 kits are either untested or unaccounted for in the United States.

Join us on April 29th for Julie Valentine Center’s 3rd annual Community Summit on Sexual Assault. The purpose of the summit is to provide education and training for healthcare professionals, law enforcement investigators, mental health professionals, victims, advocates, and other community members on the issues surrounding sexual assault in our community.

The 2019 summit will focus on ending the backlog of untested rape kits. Participants will develop an understanding of the scope of the problem, the impact the problem has on victims and our community, and federal, state, and local policy initiatives underway to process this evidence, hold perpetrators accountable, and bring justice to victims.

Please click here for conference schedule, session descriptions, and information on our speakers, Dr. Julie Valentine and Gretchen Hunt.

Registration ends April 22, 2019. Register early as this event is limited to 150 participants! Lunch will be provided by the Kappa Delta Chapter at Furman University. This event is sponsored by Prisma Health (formerly Greenville Health System) and Clemson University School of Nursing.
