Dear Friends!

On Sunday, August 26th, 2018, at 5 p.m., Suzanne, Jane and I invite you to join us for an ENCHANTING EVENING FOR FLUTE, HARP AND PIANO, in which we will showcase some of the most alluring works ever written for this unique and rare combination of instruments. The program will open with Felix Mendelssohn's evocative and seldom-played Fantasia on "The Last Rose of Summer" for solo piano in E Major, op. 15 (1827), based on a popular Irish song whose melody was also the basis of variations for flute and piano by Beethoven and Kuhlau. In its free-formed style and multi-sectional design, the Fantasia alternates Adagio passages of hymn-like lyricism with tempestuous Presto agitato, eventually winding down with a ruminative Coda that looks back on the lovely opening theme. Franz Schubert's wistful Introduction and Variations on Trockne Blumen for flute and piano, D. 802 (1824) is arguably the most significant work in the 19th century literature for the flute which uses song No. 18 from Schubert's iconic song cycle, Die schone Mullerin (1823) as the basis for a set of seven increasingly rhapsodic and fiendishly virtuosic variations that conclude with a triumphant march. A renowned Spanish composer of the first part of the 20th century, Joaquin Turina produced a sizable body of chamber music that includes his exotic and never-heard Tema y variaciones for harp and piano, op. 100 (1945) - an enchanting work that reveals the joint influence of the French and his native Andalusian music infused with the composer's own distinctive compositional style. Our program will conclude with Mozart's sublime Concerto for flute, harp, and orchestra (piano) in C Major, K. 299 (1778) composed while on his sojourn in Paris which happens to be Mozart's only work for the harp and one of the earliest works ever composed for this very unusual and colorful combination of instruments. You sure don't want to miss this one-of-a-kind Enchanting Evening for Flute, Harp and Piano!!!

Suzanne, Jane and I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday, August 26th!

Wishing you a wonderful summer,

Dr. Yelena Grinberg, founder and artistic director of the Grinberg Classical Salon Series
