Enabling inclusive climate conversations in polarising times: panel and networking
In an era where polarisation is once again challenging climate transition progress its important for every organisation to consider how it proactively listens to views which represent the full spectrum of its constituents (citizens, employees or customers).
As part of London Climate Action Week, this event is your chance to hear lessons from recent Citizen Climate engagements - Manchester Climate Change Agency's Citizen Climate Panel and Hackney Council's Citizen Climate Jury.
Hear insights on what worked, what didn't work, and lessons on moving from inclusive conversation to action.
Speakers and hosts:
- Stephanie Li is the Climate Manager at Hackney Council and led the borough’s first Citizens’ Climate Jury in spring 2024. This initiative brought together 15 randomly selected residents to develop practical recommendations on how Hackney can better protect vulnerable groups from extreme heat. Working closely with over 50 council officers, Stephanie drew on her expertise in climate project delivery, community engagement, and integrating social justice into environmental work. The Citizens’ Climate Jury has strengthened Hackney’s approach to climate adaptation, placing particular emphasis on supporting those most at risk during heatwaves.
- Samantha Nicholson is Director at Manchester Climate Change Agency and is leading activity to refresh the Manchester Climate Change Framework. Sam specialises in turning low carbon policy into successful support programmes that deliver both economic rewards and environmental benefits.
- Karen Barrass is Founder of Climate Insights which offers bespoke research, facilitation, programme design and evaluation services. Prior to this, she led the Policy and Research programme at UK100, commissioning and creating high quality research outputs building the evidence base for a place-based, locally-led transition to Net Zero. Her work with several international civil society organisations, universities and national and local governments, Karen has been working to deliver the transformation required to decarbonise society and build a more resilient future for over 20 years.
- Laila Takeh is Founder of Spiralforms which offers strategy, innovation and sustainability services. Laila and Karen supported MCCA to design and host the recent Citizen Climate Panel.
