About the event

“En France, l'Orient s'est révélé à moi…”: Entretien avec calligraphe Hassan Massoudy

Hassan Massoudy is an internationally renowned Iraqi calligrapher whose calligraphic style weaves together traditional Arabic and Japanese styles in a highly imaginative manner. Yuriko Yamanaka who organised a public event with Massoudy at MINPAKU in 2004 will moderate this lecture which will discuss Massoudy’s experience of meeting the other “Orient” vis-à-vis Japan in Paris. After working as an apprentice for calligraphers in Baghdad, Massoudy moved to Paris in 1969 where he encountered Japanese calligraphers whose style and technique left a lasting impression on his own works. The lecture will highlight how Massoudy draws stylistic as well as thematic inspiration from Japanese calligraphy and poetry. His Arabic calligraphy of haiku, based on French translations of Japanese poets such as Buson and Issa, revolves around the theme of cultural dialogue between the two Orients and the role of France as an intermediary.

Venue: Petite Salle, Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris

Time: 18:30-20:00, followed by reception

This lecture will be in French.
