Event Details

This event, Empowering Women for Sustainable Development, is the first in a three-part series of lectures devoted to promoting gender equity in development globally, and the ways in which programs can specifically support the educational and economic opportunities for women. Sponsored by the Permanent Mission of El Salvador to the United Nations and the Gender and Cultural Studies Program, College of Arts and Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, our keynote speaker will be H.E. Carlos Enrique Garcia Gonzalez, who will present on the Ciudad Mujer Project in El Salvador.  http://www.ciudadmujer.gob.sv/

Our goal is to increase awareness of projects such as Ciudad Mujer and to promote educational partnerships with civil society, governments, and local communities. 

Dr. Dawn M. Digrius, Director of the Gender and Cultural Studies program at Stevens Institute of Technology has, for the past three years, conducted research on sustainable development and the role of women in that process. Guided by the Millennium Development Goals, Digrius has offered college-age students opportunities to participate in hands-on research in Latin America, encompassing themes such as sustainable energy, water management and irrigation, and public health. She has supervised undergraduate and graduate research in Ecuador, as well as with El Salvador. http://www.stevens.edu/cal/faculty-profile?id=1433

Ambassador Garcia, A career diplomat, was the Deputy Permanent Representative at his country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York until his latest appointment. Previously, he had various responsibilities at the Mission since joining it in July 1996, including for economic, financial, social, peace and security, peacebuilding, humanitarian, environmental and human rights issues.Before his posting to New York, Mr. Garcia was Director of Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in San Salvador in 1996, and Chief of Caribbean Affairs from 1991 to 1995.He holds a special degree in international relations from the Diplomatic Academy of Madrid and a bachelor's degree in international relations from the University of El Salvador.
