TOPIC: Empowering Girls in Afterschool

ABOUT THE FORUM: We won’t let her lose her light. In this time of #MeToo, we say NOT EVER. Let's raise girls to be proud of who they are and where they are from. Let's raise boys to honor and respect girls. Let's raise humans to love and accept and celebrate all genders.

It starts with us. Our girls are brave, confident, beautiful, vulnerable, bossy, dramatic, shy, creative, and magic. They are growing up in a world where violence toward women is no longer tolerated. Collectively, our girls are lighting the way towards a safer, more equitable, and more compassionate world.

In this revolutionary session, we will explore how to create peaceful and powerful spaces in afterschool to prepare our girls to become the leaders we have all been waiting for.

In Empowering Girls in Afterschool, we will:

  • Explore the factors that hold girls back from their true power from a lens of intersectional feminism

  • Discuss the complexities of the gender spectrum in relationship to "single-sex" programming

  • Learn the 5 essential skill areas that girls must learn and practice for social-emotional empowerment

  • Be introduced to dynamic projects throughout the country that effectively work with girls and young women across ages

  • Take home ideas and strategies for leading empowering girls groups in your programs

SPEAKER: Lynn Johnson is a visionary entrepreneur, speaker, and Co-Founder/CEO of Spotlight: Girls, an Oakland-based certified B Corp with the mission to educate, inspire, and activate girls and women to take center stage. She has raised over half a million dollars in capital to license Go Girls! ™ - their popular summer camp - nationally. Lynn is also the Project Director for SheLectricity, the first-of-its kind girls' empowerment ecosystem that brings together technology, culture, and community to create safe and nurturing online and in-person environments for girls to learn, grow, innovate, and lead. Winner of 2017 SheKnows Media’s #ThePitch at BlogHer, Lynn has over 25 years’ experience in the fields of arts education and youth development and serves on the Board of Directors for the How Kids Learn Foundation, the national advisory board of Teaching Artists Guild, and the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Out-of-school time and educational leaders and practitioners, funders, and policymakers.
