Harnessing AI to Empower Language Learning for the New GCSE is a practical face-to-face workshop designed for modern language educators seeking to integrate AI into their classroom practice. Explore the transformative role of AI and discover how it can support listening, speaking, reading, and writing in line with the new GCSE specifications. See how AI can reduce workload, increase creativity, and bring the wow factor to your teaching.

Introduction

  • What AI is (and what it isn’t) for teachers and learners.
  • Responsible use of AI in education: bias (WEIRD mnemonic), inaccuracies and hallucinations, safeguarding, and why student data must never be shared.
  • Interactive DirectPoll activity: “How AI savvy are you?”

Listening

  • Creating GCSE-ready listening worksheets from YouTube clips with QR codes.
  • Using Turboscribe for accurate transcripts and dictation to provide feedback on pronunciation.
  • Introducing Suno: generating songs from GCSE vocabulary lists (e.g. food and drink from the “Healthy Living and Lifestyle” theme) for memorable listening practice.

Speaking

  • Generating role-play dialogues from Kate Languages GCSE vocabulary lists using ChatGPT.
  • Checking alignment with AQA/Edexcel lists in MultilingProfiler.
  • Modelling authentic speech with Google AI Studio, providing natural voices for students to hear and practise.

Reading

  • Creating GCSE-aligned short texts with AI.
  • Turning texts into illustrated Gemini Storybooks to scaffold comprehension and support accessibility.
  • Exploring how AI can differentiate texts instantly to meet the needs of all learners with Diffit.

Writing & Assessment

  • Transforming texts into Google Quizzes and Microsoft Forms in seconds to streamline assessment.

Conclusion and Q&A

  • Recap of key tools and workflows for supporting the new GCSE.
  • Hands-on reflection and sharing: how colleagues can adapt tools to their contexts.
