Partners Employment Lawyers and Tharoor Associates are delighted to invite you to our first Employment Law & Unconscious Bias in the workplace seminar.

We have partnered up with Tharoor Associates and have designed a one day Master Class incorporating a manual Implicit Test based on the principles of the Harvard Implicit Test (devised by Tharoor Associates) and along with this test and other tools we will discuss the following: an insight into the law on discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace and hands-on guidance on your legal and practical obligations on the management if a situation should it arise.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand UK law on discrimination and harassment and its application in the workplace
  • A review of key case law and their ramifications for employers
  • To increase awareness of the unconscious bias and to consider how it may be impacting on decision-making
  • To develop inclusive behaviours and thinking in relation to the employee
  • To improve leaders’ ability to be accountable for Valuing Diversity
  • To reflect on organisational decisions and patterns of leader behaviour

This interactive and practical workshop explores individual and cultural bias that impact on our working relationships. Allowing people, in a safe environment to both understand employment law in the workplace and unconscious bias and develop personal and company wide strategies to ensure personal biases are effectively managed.

Aims

  • Defining unconscious bias
  • Recognising the science behind unconscious bias
  • Identifying personal and business reasons to tackle unconscious bias
  • Understanding organisational and individual biases and assessing their impact
  • Identifying strategies to minimise the impact of biases on key business and people functions
  • Creating personal strategies to minimise the impact of our own biases
  • Greater insight into the UK Employment Law regime in discrimination, bias and harassment
  • Understanding the potential risks that are common in the workplace
  • Insight into good employment practices and an Employment Tribunal’s view of the steps a reasonable employer would take
  • Understanding the importance of the use of employment policies in the workplace
  • Understanding cost benefit issues and the ramification of such issues on productivity and performance

Discussion points

  • Accepting that one’s perceptions may not always be correct
  • How different groups identify things differently (social identity theory)
  • How necessary it is to break the mould of labelling and stereotyping (gender schema theory)
  • Can precise procedural instructions supplement context in communication?
  • Understand that in the workplace there are always multiple solutions – depending on personal perceptions
  • Being “conscious of your unconscious” as an ability to introduce or create a new point of view in the minds of others to facilitate change (implicit associate test)

  • Practical application of law and workplace regulations to real life workplace scenarios
