Workshop on Empirical Studies in the Domain of Global Software Engineering - ESDGSE 2019


4 - 5 May, 2019 - Heraklion, Crete, Greece

In conjunction with the 14th International Conference on Evaluation of Novel Approaches to Software Engineering - ENASE 2019


SCOPE

The phenomena of globalization brought significant financial changes to majority of the industries and specifically for software development. However, the existing literature highlighted that it is not easy and straight forward to achieve the financial benefits. The key barriers to accomplish the potential benefits of GSE are complex communication and coordination issues, developing trust among the team members and developing GSE practices due to geographical, socio-cultural and temporal distances. Understanding issues and challenges related to GSE will assist towards the successful execution of software development activities. This workshop will provide a forum for academic and industrial researchers to share their empirical based understanding related to GSE activities. We welcome the research articles which report empirical studies in various GSE domains.

Suggested topics, this workshop will endeavor, include (but are not limited to) the following:

Brief Bio
Dr. Mahmood Niazi received the M.phil. degree from the University of Manchester, U.K., and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He has spent more than a decade with leading technology ?rms and universities as a Process Analyst, a Senior Systems Analyst, a Project Manager, and a Professor. He has participated in and managed several software development projects. He is currently an Active Researcher in the ?eld of empirical software engineering. He has published over 100 articles. He is interested in developing sustainable processes in order to develop systems, which are reliable, secure, and ful?l customer needs. His research interests are evidence-based software engineering, requirements engineering, sustainable, reliable and secure software engineering processes, global and distributed software engineering, software process improvement, and software engineering project management.

Brief Bio
Arif Ali Khan received his BS in Software Engineering from University of Science and Technology Bannu, Pakistan in 2010. Arif has MSc by research in Information Technology from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. He has received his PhD degree from the department of computer science, City University of Hong Kong. Currently he is working as an Assistant Professor with the College of Computer Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. He is an active researcher in the field of empirical software engineering. His research interests include global and distributed software engineering, software process improvement, 3C’s (communication, coordination, control), requirements change management and systematic reviews. He has participated in and managed several software engineering related research projects.

Brief Bio
Dr. Mohammad Alshayeb is an Associate Professor at the Information and Computer Science Department, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He received his MS and PhD in Computer Science and certificate of Software Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2000, 2002 and 1999 respectively. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from Mutah University, Jordan in 1995. Dr. Alshayeb worked as a senior researcher and Software Engineer and managed software projects in the United States and the Middle East. Dr. Alshayeb taught and coordinated industrial training courses. Dr. Alshayeb received Khalifa award for education as the distinguished University Professor in the Field of Teaching within Arab World, 2016. He received the "Excellence in Research", "Instructional Technology", "Excellence in Advising" and "Excellence in Teaching" awards from KFUPM. Dr. Alshayeb is a member of a number of professional associations. He is a certified project manager (PMP). Dr. Alshayeb’s research interests include software quality and quality improvements, software measurement and metrics, global software engineering and empirical studies in Software Engineering.

Brief Bio
Dr. Sajjad Mahmood is an Associate professor of software engineering at Information and Computer Science Department, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He received his PhD from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia in May 2008. Prior to pursing his PhD, he also worked as a software engineer in United States and Australia. He taught and designed a number of courses related to software engineering at KFUPM. He received the ‘excellence in teaching’, ‘excellence in instructional technology’ and ‘excellence in academic advising’ awards from KFUPM. He is an active researcher in the field of software engineering and has published more than 45 articles in peer reviewed journals and international conferences. He has worked as principal and co-investigators in a number of research projects that investigate issues related to component based software development and global software development projects. His research interests include empirical software engineering, evidence based software engineering, component-based systems, global software development and software process improvement in general.

The conference acknowledges evolution in systems and software thinking due to contemporary shifts of computing paradigm to e-services, cloud computing, mobile connectivity, business processes, and societal participation. By publishing the latest research on novel approaches to software engineering and by evaluating them against systems and software quality criteria, ENASE conferences advance knowledge and research in software engineering, including and emphasizing service-oriented, business-process driven, and ubiquitous mobile computing. ENASE aims at identifying most hopeful trends and proposing new directions for consideration by researchers and practitioners involved in large-scale systems and software development, integration, deployment, delivery, maintenance and evolution.
