Description

The South Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapists and the Carolina Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy are proud to co-sponsor:

Emotionally Focused Therapy & the Forgiveness Model: Healing Infidelity and Other Betrayals

Program Description:

For many therapists, couple therapy is like standing in the middle of a highway, hoping not to be run down by two semi-trailers approaching from opposite directions – particularly in the face of the pain and volatility following infidelity. This introduction to Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and its empirically validated model for forgiveness and rebuilding trust is a great opportunity to experience first-hand the power of the EFT model.

One of the best-validated and most effective approaches to changing distressed couple relationships into loving secure bonds, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is the only couple therapy based on an empirically validated theory of adult love. Love is no longer a mystery! The science of adult love as defined by attachment theory, gives the couple therapist a reliable foundation from which to help couples shape love and loving connection. Thirty years of scientific research validates the success rate of this model and shows its relapse rate is low compared to other couple therapies. 70-75% of couples treated with EFT move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements.

This workshop will examine the implications of the science of love and bonding particularly as applied to instances of infidelity. EFT, at the cutting edge of the new era of couple therapy, offers clinicians a systematic map to heal broken trust and to shape safe emotional connection. The workshop will demonstrate how attachment theory guides couple therapists in working with emotion and in choosing specific moment-to-moment interventions that transform relational distress and shattered trust into secure bonds of intimacy and love.

Video clips of real therapy sessions and possibly a live demonstration will give you a taste of EFT in action. Experiential exercises, role-plays, and discussions will engage you in its application.

Learning Objectives - Following this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the laws of human love and bonding – how they operate in adult love relationships and how they illuminate the injurious nature of infidelity.
  • Identify the key concepts, stages and interventions of EFT.
  • Define an attachment injury and identify how infidelity shatters an attachment bond.
  • Work with infidelity in the early Stage of EFT therapy – to create safety for the forgiveness process.
  • Apply the steps of EFT’s forgiveness and resolution process, known as the Attachment Injury Resolution model (AIRM).
