Talk Title: “2018 Modern Engineering Technology Symposium”  by Dr. William Kao

 


Talk Abstract:  The Modern Engineering Technology Symposium (METS 2018) will be  held in Taipei, Taiwan on October 22-24, 2018. The 2018 Symposium’s main theme is  "科技台灣智慧生活" (Technology Taiwan Smart Life).

As part of this event 12 domain experts (3 experts from each of the 4 topics mentioned above) from the US were invited to go  back to Taiwan to make technical  presentations and recommendations to the Taiwan Government (Ministry of Economics), Academia and Industry on the four main topics that currently are of most  interest/concern  to today’s Taiwan’s economy:

1.     Technology Innovation (Artificial Intelligence, Unmanned Services, IoT Applications)

2.     Technology Exchange (Building Seismic Retrofit, Climate Change and Disaster Reduction, water resource management)

3.     Intelligent Agriculture (Precision Agriculture, remote sensing and robotic application on agriculture, biosecurity and food safety)

4.     4. Circular Economy ( biosolids, water and industrial recycling)

In this talk Dr. William Kao (Head of 2018 US Delegation, and one of the US experts) will present highlight material of all the technical presentations and the key recommendations / suggestions made by US experts at METS 2018. He will also present his own technical talk titled “After AlphaGo, What is next for AI”.

 

 

Speaker Bio: Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management (Director, VP) positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.

 Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers at IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.

Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter, where he was Chapter Chair in 2005 and 2006.

Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Emerging Technologies  courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension. 

Dr. Kao current interests include the subjects of Energy, Environment and Education.


He teaches and is a frequent lecturer on various Emerging Technologies including Clean Technology, Renewable Energy, Business Sustainability, Big Data, IoT, Smart Cities, Sensor Networks, Innovation, Augmented and Virtual Reality, AI, Robotics, and 3D Printing.
