Event Details

Technology is coming to a monitoring project near you, if it’s not already there. Last summer, hundreds of field crews started using consumer handheld devices to collect information about aquatic systems and the fish that live in them. Their experiences are being captured in a survey at If you haven't already filled it out yourself, do so now and you’ll be entered to win an iPad Mini courtesy of Sitka Technology Group (for those present at the workshop).

PNAMP, StreamNet, and Sitka Technology Group are sponsoring a hand-held technologies workshop for aquatic biologists here in the Pacific Northwest on November 18th in Portland. If you use hand held devices, or want to know more about the hardware and the software applications that are being developed, come to the workshop and learn from your colleagues about how they are using this technology in the field.

The November 18 workshop will include keynote addresses by Oregon’s former Secretary of State and now Northwest Power and Conservation Council Chair Bill Bradbury. We’ll hear from DEQ’s Watershed Assessment Manager Aaron Borisenko and from Richard Beckwith of Intel's R&D Division in order to get perspectives from government and the private sector.

There will be panel discussions, lightning talks, and product demonstrations. Click to see the draft agenda. The day will provide a unique opportunity to be a part of the convergence of science and technology in the field of environmental monitoring, where you will:

  • See demonstrations of pilot projects carried out last the summer
  •  Learn about new advanced technologies in field data collection
  • Discuss opportunities, problems and solutions
  • Set plans for taking the next steps

We look forward to seeing you there.

We will be working through lunch, so you will need to pay $12 for lunch catered by Elephant's Deli (you can choose your sandwich when you register). Lunch includes the sandwich, cookies, chips and a drink. You can bring cash or a check made out to Pacific State Marine Fisheries Commission, or pay beforehand by sending money to (due by Nov. 10, 2014) :
