Event Details

The Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) is a noncredit certificate program dedicated to helping MiraCosta College students become prominent and well-prepared leaders in their community. ELI will compliment your education by teaching you the skills and knowledge necessary for effective leadership. You must be a current Miracosta College to participate and enrollment will be verified.

 ELI participants will:

  • Acquire the building blocks to effective leadership
  • Learn to take an active leadership role in their community
  • Understand how to have a meaningful interaction with a diverse group of people
  • Learn techniques to communicate effectively
  • Enhance important life skills
  • Supplement their in-class education with out-of-class experiences
  • Network with students, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Become an advocate for change

Program Requirements

To earn the Leadership Certificate, you must complete the two day Institute. Certificates will be presented at a ceremony in the Spring Semester.

Section I: Required Workshops

ELI consists of two full days of the following workshops:

  • Communication Skills & Conflict Resolution
  • Leadership Styles
  • Diverse Communities
  • Ethical Decision-Making
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Time Management
  • Vision and Goal Setting
  • Creating Networks
  • Public Speaking

Section II: Service Project

Students are highly encouraged to complete a service project to complement their learning. Each student will submit a proposal for a service project utilizing skills learned in the workshops. Projects can be on or off campus. Participants are strongly encouraged to participate in an on-campus organization (i.e. ASG, Chariot Newspaper, Student Ambassadors, Clubs, Peer Advisors) or off-campus activity (service learning, youth group or other volunteer program). The ELI advisor will review the proposal and make suggestions to the student. Upon completion of the service project, the student will submit a 3-5 page reflection paper on the experience.
