Description

The Importance of Preparation

Before disaster strikes, citizens should be prepared for the event. This includes awareness, notification, and skill building regarding emergency procedures.

Recognizing the Threat of Severe Weather

During the spring, summer and even autumn months, the threat of severe weather is common in our area. These events include flooding, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. It is critical that we able to recognize the signs of approaching severe weather and act appropriately to improve odds of survival and to minimize damage.

Everbridge System

In the City of Joliet, the Everbridge system is a valuable tool in use to notify citizens of severe weather and other important local issues. We will take time during class to sign students up for the program.

Tornado Sheltering Tips and What to do During the Event

The time to review emergency plans for an approaching tornado is not when one is on its way. We will discuss the current watch and warning system and explain what the best practices are when a tornado is approaching.

After the Event

After the severe weather event has ended, there are often many hazards that are still present or have been created by the event. These include police, fire and EMS service interruptions, natuarl gas leaks, eletrical system failures and broken glass and increased fire risk. We will discuss these risks and how to avoid and potentially manage them.
