Event description

Description

The Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) course was designed by the Neurocritical Care Society to help health care professionals improve patient care and outcomes during the critical first hours of a patient’s neurological emergency. Now in its third version, ENLS demonstrates a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach and provides a consistent set of protocols, practical checklists, decision points, and suggested communication to use during patient management.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all health care providers who 1) may encounter or 2) provide care for patients with neurological emergencies in the first hour of their emergency care, including paramedics, emergency department physicians, critical care physicians, neurosurgeons, nurses, pharmacists, medical students and resident/fellow trainees.

The course is conducted by certified ENLS trainers. All attendees are provided access to the online course and materials. Once the live course is complete, students access the self-directed ENLS course online to complete their certification.

Activity Goals
This activity is designed to address the following core and team competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning, Interpersonal Communication, Professionalism, System-based Practice, Interdisciplinary Teams, Quality Improvement, and Employ Evidence-based Practice.

ENLS consists of 14 protocols. Each protocol was designed and written by neurointensivists and emergency medicine physicians. These protocols are designed to provide the same advice an expert in neurocritical care would provide if you called the physician for a consult and asked, “What should I do in the first hour to best help this patient and hand them off to you?”

Learning Objectives
After completing each topic, the learner will be able to: (1) recognize the signs and symptoms of the neurological emergency, (2) perform a focused neurological exam and calculate the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, (3) rapidly implement the recommended management protocol, and (4) effectively communicate pertinent medical information to the accepting health care provider.

Each topic also has specific learning objectives unique to the topic that the learner will master.
The Neurocritical Care Society's ENLS courses have been planned and implemented by Ciné-Med and the Neurocritical Care Society. This activity is designated for a maximum of 15 AMA PRA Category 1 CME, ANCC, and ACPE credits upon completion.
