Description

The National Center for Atmospheric Research invites you to join us for the second lecture in the 2017 NCAR Explorer Series:

On April 8th, get the inside scoop on Zika and climate with NCAR's Scientists Mary Haydn and Andrew Monaghan.

3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Our hands-on exhibits about weather, climate, and the Sun-Earth connection will be open for viewing before the talk (staff will be on hand to answer your questions)

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Talk by Mary Haydn and Andrew Monaghan: "Emergence of Zika and other climate-sensitive viruses in the Americas"

5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Questions & conversations

Talk Description:

What do Zika, dengue, and chikungunya all have in common? First, the viruses that cause these globally important diseases are all transmitted by the same mosquito species: Aedes aegypti. And second, all three viruses have emerged or re-emerged in the Americas recently. Climatic factors shape the transmission of these viruses in numerous ways, for example, by influencing development, reproduction, and survival of Aedes aegypti, and by regulating the rate of virus incubation and replication within the mosquito. But, humans also play an important role in determining when, where, and how virus transmission occurs. We will discuss ongoing research at NCAR that’s focused on better understanding and predicting when and where Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are present, why Zika, dengue, and chikungunya are expanding in the Americas, and what to expect in the future.

Admission is free, however seating is limited. In order to ensure a seat in the lecture hall, please obtain a free Evenbrite ticket. A sign language interpreter will be present at the lecture.

If there are no tickets remaining, we encourage you to join the waitlist. There are typically several people with tickets who do not show up to the events, hence waitlisted individuals have a good chance of being able to fit in the Main Seminar Room.
