Embracing the Math Common Core: Clarity, Coherence, and Rigor (Elementary Grades)

This session provides elementary classroom teachers with an introduction to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, is focused on the math content and skills found in the elementary grades and serves as a starting point to begin engaging with these Standards. The session is organized around the key ways in which the new mathematics Standards are different from previous NJ Standards and seeks to illustrate the increased FOCUS, COHERENCE, CLARITY, and RIGOR of the Standards. Throughout the session, engaging activities will lead to deeper understanding of: how the new Standards provide greater focus at each grade level using Critical Areas to discuss connections; how domains and clusters are organized to bring coherence to math instruction; how the increased clarity of the Standards may impact teaching and learning; and how Content Standards connect with the Standards for Mathematical Practice and form the basis of a rigorous curriculum.
