Ten million hundred thousand change management models exist in the world. Many of them are really effective. In our work, we have found that traditional change management models and practices often feel incomplete when it comes to implementing racial equity strategies, embedding anti-racist mindsets, and enacting justice-based organizational culture.

Leading racial equity change effectively calls for profound awareness of self and other, mindfulness, appreciation for complexity, skill at movement-building, and embodied (re)cognition. Leading with a racial equity mindset requires the ability to wayfind, to find our rhythm in constantly changing waters. It requires us to embrace (and, dare we say, fall in love with) emergence.

Embracing Emergence is a six-month cohort program for leaders of all races and ethnicities who hold positional power within their organizations (eg. executive directors, CEOs, managing directors, and so on). *Participants must be in the implementation stage of a racial equity change initiative.* Over the course of the program, participants will learn and develop change management strategies relevant to their organizations, gain inspiration and tools for moving their organizations along their racial equity journey, and develop support systems (internal and external) to sustain themselves for the long-haul. Above all, we will prioritize time for deep self-reflection, acknowledging ways in which our own racial identities inform, enhance, and complicate our relationship to racial equity work. In doing so, we build capacity to lead across differences authentically and effectively.

*While everyone is invited to apply regardless of race, we expect that white participants will have engaged in substantial training in racial equity, unlearning whiteness, and allyship.*

Upon completion of this course, a participant will be able to:

  • Internalize the principles and elements of emergent strategy
  • Reflect on how they might further embody emergent strategy in their racial equity work
  • Understand how change happens and how to facilitate it
  • Communicate with transparency about change
  • Build trust across racial and power differences
  • Apply their learnings to a change they are managing
  • Employ mindfulness practices as a means for self-care and self-awareness
  • Build a network of supporters to lean on during and after the cohort’s time together

This program is right for you if:

  • You are an executive leader with some formal decision-making capacity in your organization
  • You have experience leading racial equity initiatives, and can draw from these experiences in your session participation
  • You are ready for a great deal of reflection and transformation
  • You are looking for a brave space to learn and a community of people to be authentic and open about the challenges of racial equity work

This program will include:

  • Five sessions occurring on Thurs, Feb 24, 2022 (10 a.m.-4 p.m. EST), Thurs, March 17, 2022 (10 a.m.-2 p.m. EST), Thurs, April 21, 2022 (10 a.m.-2 p.m. EST), Weds, May 25, 2022 (10 a.m.-2 p.m. EST), Weds, June 22, 2022 (10 a.m.-2 p.m. EST).~Note: White participants will be asked to attend a sixth pre-program session on Thurs, Feb 3, 2022 from 1-3 p.m. EST
  • Two individual coaching sessions to support individualized learning, scheduled at your convenience
  • Access to a network of executives in similar positions of leading racial equity work
  • A workbook including readings and other resources to support your learning and body and mind exercises to support wellness and deepening reflection

This program will occur on Zoom, with the potential for an in-person meeting if the group feels safe and we are able to coordinate it! Zoom links will be sent at least 24 hours before each session.
