Embracing Authenticity and Gratitude
Fri, April 14, 2017, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM PDT
Research indicates gratitude and appreciation have a huge impact on how happy and successful we will be. Being who we authentically are allows us to access a power that is uniquely ours. Join these two fun, engaging speakers as they honor Autism Awareness month, and help kids, teens and adults, connect even more with gratitude!
Muskan Virk, one of the world’s youngest inspirational authors and Girl Power/Kid Power activist, began her gratitude practice at the age of 6 after she learned about how women and girls in some parts of the world are not treated well, just for being female. Including that baby girls are not wanted or welcome into some families simply because they are girls. And some girls are not allowed to go to school because they are girls. She learned this sometimes even happens within her own ethnic group.
Muskan felt she had to do something. She decided to fundraise for the Malala Fund, as a way to help and to raise awareness. Everyday she learned more about challenges in the world and people who were suffering. She started feeling more and more depressed and frustrated, feeling like there was no way she could do enough.
It was at this point that Muskan’s mother, seeing how depressed Muskan had become, suggested that Muskan keep a journal and write down something she is grateful for everyday. Everyday Muskan wrote down something she was grateful for, big or small. Through this practice, which she came to call her attitude of gratitude, Muskan transformed her feelings of depression and helplessness into gratitude and appreciation. Together she, and her mom, turned her journal entries into a book, 365 Days of Gratitude: My Attitude of Gratitude, and Muskan began sharing her message of compassion, gratitude and unconditional love with an ever-growing audience of kids and adults, alike.
Micki O’Brien, M.A., is a former challenged and challenging student! Being told at a young age that her learning disabilities would hamper her success, she sought outside-the-box opportunities to learn. Featured in the YouTube documentary “Autism, Love and Learning,” and with experience in a wide diversity of educational modalities, she believes in recognizing, building on and celebrating the unique strengths of every individual. And she knows firsthand the power our beliefs and mindset have over our success and happiness.
As an Advanced Certified Trainer of the Nurtured Heart Approach®, she has fine-tuned how to find greatness in each moment, and how to teach others how to find that greatness, too!
This 1.5 hour event, immediately followed by a book signing, is designed for families and individuals alike, and will include: a few simple interactive exercises, Muskan and Micki speaking both separately and together (during a question and answer period), a short break in the middle and an opportunity for pictures/book signings starting at 8:30pm.
April is Autism Awareness Month ("which is funny because when you're autistic, you're autistic all year round!" a little humor from an autistic friend) and honoring and supporting the unique strengths of autistic people is a big part of Micki's life. We want you to know that you are invited to bring your authentic, unique self and your authentic, unique neurology! We are excited to share time with you!
Please note: If you, or someone you are accompanying, is easily overwhelmed by loud noise and/or crowds please bring ear plugs or another noise cancelling or noise reducing tool. We will do our best to provide a quiet space to retreat to in the event of overwhelm, and we also recommend using whatever tools or strategies work best for you/the person you are accompanying.
Please inquire by April 7th if you need special accommodations. We cannot promise that we can provide them, but we will do our darnedest.
