Event description

Description

This is a four-day immersive training for body-centered practitioners, including massage, bodywork, yoga, movement and meditation. It meets the WA state CE requirements for physical therapy and massage therapy.

————————

So much of what we do in our work as somatic practitioners is behind the scenes.

At the forefront of most trainings is the technique — the “what you are doing.” The particular myofascial release, the turn of the femur bone this way or that in a yoga pose. The rest of it — the “why” and “how” you’re doing it — often goes unexamined.

Becoming a more attuned, adaptable and embodied practitioner is what’s at the heart of this workshop. At its heart is the common ground underlying all body-based disciplines. It’s not another technique to add to your bag of tricks; it is in-depth examination and systems training on the bag itself: how you see, feel and imagine a human body.

This training is in its third year as part of an ongoing inquiry around how we become, and nurture each other in becoming, more aware, embodied and effective practitioners.

WHAT A DAY LOOKS LIKE

Some movement, some looking at visual images. Some listening to lecture on a particular aspect of human anatomy, some palpation to feel that imagery for yourself. Some guided reflection like journaling, some visualization and mediation. And of course, some rest, some food, maybe even some tears and some laughter (this work can go deep)!

————————

WHAT WE’LL COVER

  • Maps of the human body, anatomy and otherwise : how they’re created, how we use them, what’s on them and, most importantly, what’s not

  • The body in 3D: shapes the body takes as an embryo, shapes the body takes as a human

  • The body in time: breakdown and recovery, elasticity, fluid rhythms

  • Release and tone: what’s the “right amount” of tone for any particular body, part, situation? (Is there such a thing? We think yes but it’s not a quick answer.)

  • What to feel for: standing, seated and on-the-floor palpation

  • Partnered activities: the power of interaction and potential pitfalls of working with human beings

  • Tracking: body language and ways to hear it

  • Interoception, somatic neuroscience, the biology of motivation, and heaps of other little interconnected anatomical nuggets

  • And, most importantly perhaps: fitting this all into your current practice

FOOD

Last year we did a co-cooking plan, where we all took turns cooking and cleaning, and it was really wonderful. We’ll go for that again this year, and will be in touch sometime mid-July to set that up. (And yes, for sure we will check in first about dietary restrictions.)

LODGING

This is an immersion in every sense of the word. To hold the container for it, we’ll be working on a big, beautiful lodge outside Leavenworth, WA.

You have a guaranteed place to stay here, though please note you will almost certainly be sharing a room with a few other people or sleeping on a pad on the floor.

If for whatever reason, you’d like your own space, off-site, you are of course welcome to arrange that yourself and meet us in the morning for the day of classes.

————————

WHAT ELSE

Each day you’ll be learning, moving and feeling into your own body a ton. It will likely be both exhilarating and exhausting. We highly recommend completely blocking off your calendar, i.e. don’t have any work to do for those five days if you can swing it.

Bring clothes to move in (sweats or whatever) as well as clothes to be comfortable outside in. Bring a journal and pen. Bring earplugs.

ABOUT US

We are good friends and mutual admirers of each other’s work, so it’s fun and it’s an honor to continue to work together in this way. We’ve been, and will continue to be, busting our asses to make the material in this workshop powerful, useful, practice- and maybe even life-altering stuff.
