Description

EMBODIED ANATOMY — 4 DAY IMMERSION
An Integrative Approach to Working with the Body
with Michael Hamm, LMP CCST and Liam Bowler LMT BCSI

This 4-day workshop is open to bodyworkers, clinicians, movement teachers, somatic educators, and artists.

It meets the WA state CE requirements for physical therapy and massage therapy.

So much of what we really do in an embodied practice is beneath the surface. Whether it’s bodywork, yoga, somatic therapy, or any related field, the most valuable work involves a deep shift in our relationship to the body. The various tricks & techniques we learn are just the tip of an iceberg whose mass often goes unexamined.

To grow as teachers, practitioners, and artists, we need to find ways of combining our various methods more skillfully, and with deeper understanding.

The heart of this workshop is becoming a more attuned, adaptable and embodied practitioner.

Whether your practice of embodiment is clinical, creative, expressive, or exploratory, this four-day immersion will help you:

  • Develop freedom within the limits of a method,

  • Talk skillfully about the body across a variety of disciplines,

  • Employ imagery effectively, and

  • Learn to ask questions that matter.

===========

METHODS: This is an immersive hands-on training that includes interactive lectures, palpation, and various lineages of movement and somatic meditation practices.

We will focus on these themes:

EMBODIED MOTIVATION: how do we co-create sessions that have real meaning for both you and your client? We’ll incorporate methods from motivational interviewing, as well as some embodied self-inquiry.

EMBRYOLOGIC UNFOLDING: The adult body we presently inhabit is just an embryo having reached a growth equilibrium. All our actions and sensations are built upon this developmental path. By studying how structures and systems in the body came to be, we understand more deeply what they are, and how they are still becoming. New movements and perceptions become possible.

SOMATIC NEUROSCIENCE: We will become conversant in the current science of how the brain represents the body: how sensation is encoded along with emotion, how imagery and affects perception, and how new kinesthetic and interoceptive skills are learned.

WORKING WITH PERCEPTUAL BARRIERS: When your client has one idea and you have another that’s different or maybe even in direct opposition, what do you do? When your client has no idea what you’re trying to communicate, how do you reorient your approach?

RESONANCE: The human voice is a miraculous behavior in the body, and a key way that we communicate. We will get a clear understanding of its anatomy, from the bellows of the lungs, to the ‘reed’ of the vocal folds, to the resonators of the chest and cranium. We will use the voice to explore the body’s capacity for resonance and connection.

TIME: The body in time is a different thing than in any given moment. Tissues deform at different rates, and movement arises differently when it is fast vs. slow, constant vs. rhythmic. Healing is a layered process, happening at multiple speeds. We will cultivate our ability assess and work with the body in different timeframes.

SURFACES AND CENTERS: There are times when it’s wise to work at the edge of a pattern, and other times when it’s best to go straight to the heart of it. This is true of palpation, of motion barriers, and of the felt sense. We will develop our skills of navigating to the right layer for meaningful change to occur.

TONE LANGUAGE and THE LIMITATIONS OF ALIGNMENT-BASED THINKING: Excessive tone or inappropriate motor patterns may exist even in the presence of “proper” alignment. Seeing these tonal behaviors and inquiring after their cause in the body is a profound skill for an embodied practitioner.

Do you get a big “heck yeah” upon reading the above? Perfect. Please join us.

TUITION: $595 early bird until June 1; $695 thereafter.

This * includes * four nights lodging!

To avoid the EventBrite fee of 5.9%, feel free to either PayPal the cost of tuition to liam@thebodyawake.com or Venmo @liam-bowler

Refund policy: up to two months out, we will refund half your tuition if you need to cancel for any reason. No refunds past June 14*

===========

FOOD: we’ll be in touch as August gets closer to propose a meal sharing plan, where we all take turns cooking and cleaning. We were thinking that is both less expensive than hiring a chef, and also a fun way to bond. (Yes, we will check in first about dietary restrictions.)

===========

LODGING: We’ll be staying and holding class in two big, beautiful houses outside Leavenworth, WA. It's a pretty ridiculously gorgeous setup. Check it out at http://www.snowgrasslodge.com/

You have a guaranteed place to stay here, though please note you will almost certainly be sharing a room with a few other people. There are limited beds, but plenty of floor space in the lodge, and we will suggest folks organize the "who gets a bed" game by age and/or physical need or limitation.

If you’d like to rent your own space, off-site, you are welcome to arrange that independently.

===========

TRAVEL: We can help coordinate folks keen to carpool from Seattle, either the city or the airport, to the lodge in Leavenworth.

===========

WHAT ELSE: Each day you’ll be learning, moving and feeling into your own body a ton. It will likely be both exhilarating and exhausting. We highly recommend completely blocking off your calendar, i.e. don’t have any work to do for those five days if you can swing it. Bring clothes to move in (sweats or whatever) as well as clothes to be comfortable outside in. Bring a journal and pen.

===========

ABOUT US: We’re good friends and mutual admirers of each other’s work, so it’s fun and it’s an honor to get to work together in this way. And we’ve been, and will continue to be, working hard to make the material in this workshop powerful, useful, practice- and maybe even life-altering stuff.

=======

* Regarding our refund policy: we have this policy because of the upfront costs in reserving a space, and because we find that people show up differently when they've committed to coming. We have no wish to penalize folks in very difficult circumstances, so please contact us if a true emergency arises.
