Elysium Artists for the Arctic began as an epic expedition to the high Arctic in August 2015. A team comprising 66 of the worlds’ most renowned and respected photographers, cinematographers, explorers, artists and scientists, spent three weeks travelling through Norway, Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland, in an effort to both qualify and quantify human-induced climate change in the Arctic. Regarded by climatologists as one of the most enchanting and critically important ecosystem on our planet, the Arctic is not only fragile, but under severe threat from the warming of the world’s climate. Ninety percent of our planet’s most respected scientists agree that human activities are the principle driving force behind our current climate crisis. The Arctic, with its unique ecosystem, is the proverbial canary in the coal mine, acting as an indicator of the overall health of the Earth’s various ecosystems and biomes. A climate crisis now happening in the Arctic -a crisis that will ultimately affect all of us.
The Elysium team comprising 66 team members from 19 different countries is made up of some of the most influential voices in the fields of environment, exploration and science. Some of these members include legends such as Dr Sylvia Earle (Mission Blue, National Geographic Explorer- In- Residence), David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes (National Geographic) Michael AW (Ocean Geographic), Ernie Brooks II, Wyland, Howard Shaw and Dr Cabell Davis (Oceanographer, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute). These legendary names came together with many other dedicated and passionate artists, conservationists and scientists who also care deeply about our planet. As a team, they are now ready to share a definitive body of work with the world. The Elysium Artists for the Arctic exhibition is a multi-faceted interpretation of the Arctic that aims to inspire all of us to take action and preserve not just this critical habitat of the North, but our planet as a whole for future generations.
Singapore is where the Elysium Artists for the Arctic exhibition will premiere. The exhibition will feature a collection of images specially curated by Rosamund Kidman Cox, veteran of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition & BBC Wildlife Magazine, Peter Ong, former Photo Editor at the Straits Times, and Miriam Stein Battles, Photo Editor at National Geographic publications.
This body of work will reveal the magnificence of a white horizon, the charismatic icons of the polar north: polar bears and seals, the brotherhood of walruses, birds of the northern sky and the hypnotic attraction of icebergs and glaciers. Through photography, painting, science, documentary and music, Elysium Artists for the Arctic aims to generate a better understanding of human-induced climate change, and its effect on all of us.
In conjunction with the Singapore exhibition, a book of the same title will be launched at the opening of the exhibition. This book is a fine-art production is case-bound, hand-sewn, and printed on fine-matt art paper, using state-of-the-art technology. Two previous books by Ocean Geographic have won the Palme d’Or at the World Underwater Pictures Festival in France.
