Event Details

Free online English lessons are given to adult learners of English whose level of the language ranges between elementary and advanced. The volunteer students are accepted from around the world on a pro-bono basis. The lessons are given to pairs and small groups of 3-4 students online using Skype (audio-chat) and the ELN Online Classrooms at (more on this)

Each volunteer is invited acquire a free ticket and attend a placement interview (see the details below) to negotiate the contents of the free classes, to determine his/her level of spoken English, and to set the dates and clock times of his/her free ELN small group classes. Each ticket entitles the purchaser to one 1-hour e-lesson. Please note that invitations to attend placement interview will be sent by email and will request registration at and doing the diagnostic grammar test at

The ELN (EnglishLab.Net) Project is a pro-bono initiative aimed at giving learners of English the opportunity to study English online and teachers of English to develop and practise their e-teaching skills. All the e-lessons are going to be given to small groups of e-learners in the Virtual Classrooms of the ELN LMS (EnglishLab.Net Learning Management System) at via Skype (audio only).

If you are a teacher of English, you can take part in this project with a small group of your own students, and learn about how to teach online using ELN virtual classrooms. Joining TPD (teacher professional development) workshops could be a great way to develop your e-teaching skills and strike up professional friendships.

If you are a very advanced learner of English or a private tutor without formal teaching qualifications, you can attend a mini-course for Online Discussion Moderators, learn the basics and moderate one or two discussions with either your groupmates or other project volunteers as an outcome of this mini-course.

If you are a learner of English - any level - you can simply attend English lessons if you decide to take part in the project. There are quite a few options for everyone to choose from. There will be lessons with experienced tutors and trainee teachers as well as discussion moderators.

Tutors' and Moderators' minimum level of English is expected to be C 1.2 (IELTS band 8 or higher, CAE B or higher), and there will also be some tutors and moderators whose level of English is native-like (C2, IELTS band 9+ or CPE A).

Free small group lessons are going to be given between 10 May, 2015, and 30 August, 2015. To attend, you will need to create a student account at, which is where you will attend your placement interview and all the project lessons. Your account will be activated shortly before your placement interview.

The interview is a short Skype call (audio only, no camera) which is 15-20 mins long on average. The aim of the interview is to ascertain your level and to decide which groups you could join on which dates and at what clock times. To ensure quality, please use broadband Internet and a good headset (headphones with a noise-cancelling microphone).

Each volunteer has a chance to be selected to attend a 6-hour mini-course and a few random standalone lessons, so please get yourself tickets only on those days when you are sure you will be able to attend. Please note that it may not be possible to offer everyone places on all days as groups get full rather quickly, and it is always a big challenge to divide people into groups by level and language aim at the same time. Yet, we will do our best to give everyone who gets a ticket the opportunity to take part in the project.

After getting tickets (get them on those days when you can definitely be online), please add the organizer of this event to your Skype contact list (her Skype ID is stacey_ielts) and specify your first name, last name, and the words ELN Project 10.05.15 - 30.08.15 . The organizer will negotiate the date and clock time of your placement interview.

The event is free of charge, but you will be expected to provide some feedback on the lessons you attend - teachers and organisers will do their best to create an exciting and useful experience for every attendee, and will be truly grateful to everyone for all their comments and suggestions.
