Event description
Hits from Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra presented by The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra to benefit the Sparrow's Nest charity!

About this event

The Freedom Park Bandshell in the Town of LaGrange will be the venue for a swinging "Ella and Frank, Big Band Style" show presented by The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra to benefit the Sparrow's Nest local charity. Performances are Friday, June 3rd at 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 4th at 6 p.m. and the suggested donation is $20 per person.

"Ella and Frank, Big Band Style" will feature The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra, including six vocalists and swing dance performers, in a show spotlighting the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and their friends. Ella and Frank collectively recorded more than three thousand different songs during their careers, which spanned the Golden Age of Popular Music. They started off singing with big bands during the swing era, Ella with Chick Webb and Frank with Tommy Dorsey, and then went on to spectacular solo careers where they were often backed by the big bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and others. "Ella and Frank, Big Band Style" will highlight the best of those songs: the songs at the core of the Great American Songbook that they and their friends brought into our lives, all in the most exciting setting of a live big band.

Songs made famous by Ella Fitzgerald that will be performed include "A Tisket, A Tasket" from her early big band years and arrangements of "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Mack the Knife" from her later solo tours. Standards popularized by Frank Sinatra will include "Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week" from his early big band career and arrangements of "Love is the Tender Trap" and "You Make Me Feel So Young" from his later years. Other classics that will be performed include "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "I Only Have Eyes for You", "Stormy Weather", "I Got Rhythm", and many more. Just as Ella and Frank did when they appeared together in concert on Broadway, the finale of the show will be "The Lady is a Tramp".

Although tickets won't be required for entry, the suggested donation is $20 per person, which can be made here or at a performance. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Sparrow's Nest local charity. Sparrow's Nest of the Hudson Valley provides meals to the families of caregivers and children diagnosed with cancer. More information about Sparrow's Nest can be found at sparrowsnestcharity.org.

The Big Band Sound has performed throughout the Hudson Valley for over 40 years and this "Ella and Frank" show is the ninth in a series of “Big Band Style” shows that they have presented to great acclaim. Over the past five shows, more than thirty-five thousand dollars has been raised for Sparrow's Nest of the Hudson Valley. In 2020, The Big Band Sound was recognized by the Dutchess County Executive's Arts Awards with their Special Citation.

Freedom Park is located at 212 Skidmore Road in LaGrangeville and accessible parking and entry is available. Bring folding chairs, blankets, and picnic items, but please note that dogs are not allowed. If it should rain, the performance will take place under the cover of the large picnic pavilion adjacent to the bandshell.
