ABOUT Bruce Joseph

In the early 1980s, Bruce Joseph joined the iconic Anchor Brewing Company after graduating from college. Thirty years later and after working both in brewing and distilling, Bruce is now the Head Distiller of Hotaling & Co. (Formerly Anchor Distilling Company). The transition from brewing to distilling was an interesting adventure for Bruce, especially since it involved launching one of America’s first craft distilleries.

In 1993, Fritz Maytag, the former owner of Hotaling & Co., was inspired by the idea of recreating historically popular spirits that had been lost during prohibition. Fritz hand-selected Bruce to become a part of the four-person team that developed a few of the first post-prohibition craft spirits.

Not only did Bruce play an integral role in developing the recipes for Hotaling & Co.’s seven spirits including Old Potrero Whiskey, Junipero Gin, Anchor Old Tom, Genevieve Gin and Hophead Vodka, he now leads the efforts to make them.

While overseeing production of the current portfolio, which is hand-crafted including hand-bottled in San Francisco, Bruce also considers innovation as one of the most enjoyable parts of the job. Most recently, Bruce has helped the company introduce new special cask finishes, including Port and Stout, to its Old Potrero Straight Rye range.
