Event description
Design Systems Summit -A full-day event where we discuss the next level of design systems and how they shape the product development process

About this Event

Design systems get built in a centralized model and it is becoming harder without a proper process when different people want to contribute to the system. Join us for our second annual un-conference, a full-day event where we discuss taking the design system to the next level with effective processes and collaboration.

Hear how companies like Slack, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google, Shopify, Hubspot approach developing cohesive and consistent processes inside their organizations and design systems to keep their design and engineering teams aligned and build products faster

About the speakers

Bethany Fong // Senior Staff Interaction Designer // @Google

Bethany currently leads the Material Design System team at Google. She’s a self-taught UX practitioner, having studied Product Design and Mechanical Engineering at Stanford. She joined Google in 2011, exploring system and OS design through Android, Android TV, and Accessibility. In 2013 she became one of the first three interaction designers on Material Design and helped to define the design system from the ground up; recent work includes leading the design system rebranding and subsequent adoption at Google. Bethany’s deeply invested in building inclusive products and teams alike.

Garrett Miller // Staff Engineer Lead, Design Systems // @Slack

Garrett currently works with Slack's designers to create Slack Kit, their product design language and UI framework. He has spent a good chunk of his life working within the nooks and crannies of software engineering, business development, product design, and user experience. After doing many of those things at Mapbox and Opower, he now leads design systems engineering at Slack.

Kyle Peatt// Director of Design // @Shopify

Kyle Peatt, Director of UX, Shopify - Kyle enjoys problems. Lucky for him, leading Product UX at Shopify provides plenty of opportunities to think about complicated interconnected problems and try to come up with simple, powerful solutions. As Director of UX, Kyle leads interdisciplinary teams across content, research, design, and front-end development to create great experiences to help Shopify’s hundreds of thousands of merchants. He also enjoys a good game of crib.

Jess Clark // Senior Manager Design Systems // @LinkedIn

Jess leads the Design Systems team at LinkedIn, responsible for enabling quality design at scale through Art Deco – their Design System. The team strives to empower and educate their peers to deliver amazing, inclusive, consistent experiences to its members. As a Bay Area local, she’s lived and worked in close proximity to the heart of the tech scene her entire life, and she’s had the pleasure of learning from and collaborating with some of the most talented professionals in the world at LinkedIn.

Julie Nergararian // Technical Lead, Frontend // @Hubspot

Julie is a tech lead on HubSpot’s frontend infrastructure team that creates and maintains the React-based HubSpot Canvas Design System. Her work empowers HubSpot developers to efficiently build fast, accessible, consistent user interfaces. Julie has worked on the design system since the product-wide adoption of HubSpot Canvas in 2016. Julie is passionate about the intersection of design and frontend development, web accessibility, internationalization, and organizational process. She has presented at ReactJS Dublin on documenting design systems while leveraging automation to keep them up-to-date.

Mariah Muscato // Senior Product Designer // @ Hubspot

Mariah is a growth designer in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She’s currently working on product-led monetization and revenue growth at HubSpot. Previously she was a key player in the development of their design system, HubSpot Canvas. In the past, she worked at Runkeeper / ASICS Digital where she also worked on design systems and monetization. She believes good design results in business growth. She believes chocolate chip scones are superior to mixed berry.
