Background: Critical Need for Change
BIPOC and immigrant women bring unique and powerful perspectives, skills, and experiences to Canada that add value to our economy, society, and community. Although these gifts can be leveraged to build high-impact, sustainable businesses:
- Immigrant women entrepreneurs are under-represented in business. They are often undermined and overlooked as their prior knowledge and education are undervalued in Canada.
- Black women entrepreneurs continue to face systemic barriers. Many institutions and organizations designed to support entrepreneurs have entrenched conscious and unconscious biases that exclude Black women and create additional hurdles and challenges.
- Indigenous women entrepreneurs continue to face systemic barriers and disadvantages such as access to services, networks, mentors, financing, information, and basic infrastructure.
If we are to create a truly inclusive economy where women from every walk of life can grow and thrive, it is essential to drive meaningful and sustainable change for all women entrepreneurs. This includes economically empowering BIPOC and Immigrant women founders and business owners.
We will address this challenge together as a community on November 17 at Bayview Yards.
