ABOUT THIS CLASS

Bring your artwork to life! This workshop-style course is an introduction to programming and working with micro-controllers such as Arduino. Arduino is a software and hardware environment that is the go-to for professionals and makers who want to control lights, motors, sensors, and interfacing software with the real world. This is a beginner level course, meaning you do not need any prior electronics or programming knowledge. Whether you are a visual artist looking to incorporate interactive light into your work, or a musical looking to add expressive performative control in your music, the Arduino platform is the perfect environment to electrify your art!

This introductory course breaks down the complexity of working with micro-controllers like Arduino and gives you a step-by-step guide to getting your ideas working in the real world. Students will be able to take the skills gained in the course and apply them to a wide range of physical computing applications including interactive sensor-based systems, reactive lighting using LED technology, and kinetic sculptures using a variety of motors.

The course will focus on helping each student to develop their own projects through hands-on workshopping and in-class practice. The course culminates in a public showcase where students have the opportunity to show their work as installations, performances, or even collaborations with other dadageek students.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This course will give you the skills to begin working with micro-controllers and programming within the Arduino IDE. This includes working with LED lights, controlling servo motors, using light, touch, and motion-based sensors, and implementing computer interacting with music software using the MIDI protocol. Additionally, we will be covering the basics of breadboarding and soldering with electrical components.

Students who successfully complete this course will:

  • In-depth introductory training on programming with Arduino
  • Working with the “Teensy” micro-controller
  • Introduction to soldering and breadboarding electronics
  • Working with light, touch, and motion-based sensors
  • Controlling a variety of motor types for genetic sculpture applications
  • Working with various LED-based technology
  • Communication with computer software using the MIDI protocol
REQUIREMENTS
  • No prior coding experience necessary
CLASS MATERIALS

Students should bring:

  • Laptop with Arduino installed (free software)

dadageek in-class supplies include:

  • Soldering workstations and tools
  • USB cables
  • Power supplies

Materials fee will supply you with (for you to keep!):

  • An Arduino compatible micro-controller
  • Prototyping breadboard
  • A sensor kit with 37 sensors
  • A motor kit with servo and hobby motors with gears
  • Assorted LEDs and an LED strip
  • Various small electrical components
