 ELECTION

(Alexander Payne, 1999)

Starring Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick, and Chris Klein

About the film:

Tracey Flick (Reese Witherspoon), an ambitious student, finds her unopposed run for high school president hijacked by teacher (Matthew Broderick), who, in a fit of pique, bribes a popular football player (Chris Klein) to stand against her.

"Election is a product of our new political culture, a culture defined not by the ideological confrontation of Left and Right, but by the cold war of sexual politics, a taboo world of inappropriate behaviour and "crossing the line". Election dramatises all this in a fearless, pertinent, fiendishly funny way. It is a modern classic."

--Peter Bradshaw
