Event Details

Applications for the Spring 2018 eLearning Faculty Academyare now being accepted.

The eLearning Faculty Academy is a training initiative developed by the Center for Innovative Pedagogy(CIP) with support from the College-wide Distance Education Committee (DEC). Note: The term “eLearning” covers fully online and blended/hybrid courses.

The purpose of the Academy is twofold:

  • Equip faculty members who are new to eLearning with the tools to develop courses and effectively use their teaching talents in an online format. This may include faculty who have applied and had a course proposal approved for the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • Introduce new innovations to “veteran” eLearning faculty who are dedicated to significantly revising their courses. Veteran faculty will serve as informal mentors to their new-to-eLearning peers.

The main goals of the Academy are to provide:

  1. All participants with an overview of eLearning at the College;
  2. Instructional technology assistance in course development;
  3. Resources to participants towards developing an eLearning course over the duration of the eLearning Faculty Academy;
  4. A semester-long fun and engaging eLearning training program; and
  5. Assistance to participants in being as close to complete with their eLearning course as possible.

Time Commitment and Obligations

The eLearning Faculty Academy will operate as a blended program with content in Blackboard and will have formal face-to-face meetings every other Friday (exceptions to the biweekly schedule will be made to accommodate holidays) from 9:10 AM to 3:10 PM in the CIP office located in the Huntington Library on the Ammerman campus. Even though six hours are assigned to the face-to-face sessions, there are some sessions that will be shorter and the excess time will be dedicated to one-on-one help, if so desired.

To successfully complete the Academy each participant will adhere to the following requirements.

Attendance Commitment

  • Attendance in the face-to-face Friday sessions is mandatory. Faculty members cannot be scheduled to teach during the hours the Academy is in session.
    • Please contact the director of CIP if there are any issues or concerns.
    • Each participant is allowed one absence; alert the academy coordinator and your assigned facilitator.

Participant Commitment

  • All online course material must be completed by the due dates provided in Blackboard.
  • All participants must meet with their assigned facilitator once per month.
    • Having more than one monthly meeting with your facilitator is highly encouraged. CIP is here to help with your course development.

Participants will be asked to fill out anonymous surveys throughout the eLearning Faculty Fellowship Academy. CIP will dedicate a set amount of time before each session for the participants to discuss their experiences during the previous session. This will allow for assessment of the Academy and its effectiveness. It is important for the participants to know that all feedback will be used to improve future faculty experiences in the eLearning Faculty Academy.

Participant Skill Set
Prerequisite skills required: knowledge of file management (save, save as, upload, download, etc.), using multiple programs at the same time, inserting & saving images, using multiple browsers with multiple windows/tabs, using Microsoft Office products, and using Adobe Acrobat (reader or professional).

What Can You Expect To Have Completed On The Final Day?
The Academy is meant to be a gateway into the world of academic technology and is part of your road to becoming an online certified faculty member at SCCC. At the end of the Academy each participant will have completed the following in their Blackboard course shell:

  • An online course outline
  • A “Getting Started” course module
  • An “Icebreaker” activity
  • Two additional modules of your choosing (if not the entire course)
  • A course map/outline for building the course

Additionally, each participant who successfully completes these and all other Academy requirements will earn conditional certification to teach one online/hybrid/blended course.

During the Academy, a copy of your course outline will be provided to the Distance Education Committee (with faculty member’s approval). The DEC will provide feedback and suggestions to CIP on items that might need improvement. This is an extremely important process as the DEC will be assisting CIP in providing a sound and engaging program for the College.

The final step in becoming an online certified faculty member will occur during the first semester you choose to teach the online/hybrid/blended course. Upon successful completion of the online observation with your department chair you will be granted full status as an online faculty member.

The Participants
New to online teaching SCCC faculty members and veteran faculty members are welcome. Each participant will be assigned a facilitator from CIP who will be his or her point of contact and guide through the Academy. You must fill out the Application form (2017 Approval Form Online Learning Environment.pdf ) and gain approval form your Academic Department Chair and the campus Dean of Academic Affairs.

The eLearning Faculty Academyofficially starts on January 29, 2018, the first on-campus meeting is Friday, February 9th, 2018. The Academy usually meets biweekly on Fridays. In May our last two meetings are weekly.

Note: topics and titles are subject to change.

- Participation is dependent upon class space (your registration here may not assure you a seat until the following semester) and you must complete the eLFa Approval for Online Learning form (Academic Chair & campus Dean of Academic Affairs must approve and sign form).

- All participants must have the attached form completed and forwarded to their Chair’s prior to Oct. 23, 2017.

- Fall 2017 applicants that were placed on the Spring 2018 wait list have been automatically registered for the Spring 2018 academy.

- All training must be pre-approved by an Academic Chair and the Campus Dean of Academic Affairs.

- All applicants will be contacted by Nov. 1, 2017 with a status update.
