Event description

Description

Creative Aging focuses on the wisdom, creativity, and vitality of older people, building on the beneficial and powerful role of the arts in enhancing their quality of life. Elders Share the Arts’ unique place as the pioneer of field since 1979 sets the stage for our training programs for both individuals and organizations. Our master teaching artists and long-running benchmark programs - some for over 25 years - give us the expertise in older adults' arts education and partnership-building to advise organizations on how to create their own arts programs for older adults - or bring youth and seniors together in intergenerational art-creation - and we offer tools and techniques to individuals looking to lead high-caliber projects that transform the memories of older adults into art.

Our fall training series is designed for NYC-based Teaching Artists and Administrators looking to begin working with older adults, or improve already-existing programs. The training will have a special focus on developing bi-lingual curriculum to better serve older adults of all backgrounds. We are partnering with the NYC's local arts councils to promote this training, which aligns with application deadlines for the citywide SU-CASA program that places artists and arts organizations in residence at senior centers across the city.

Come to this training to explore answers to these questions:

  • What is Creative Aging?
  • What is the research behind the benefits of the arts for older adults?
  • How is working with Older Adults different than working with youth?
  • How do senior centers work? How can I best create a collaborative partnership with center staff and members?
  • How can I successfully attract seniors of all backgrounds to my programs and projects?
  • How can I inspire seniors to share life-stories and wisdom as the basis of their art-work?
  • What are some methods and exercises to transform memory into art through the Performing Arts? Visual Art? Literary Art? Music? Dance?
  • How can I create a final event to best showcase the creativity of older adults to the public?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities of working in this growing field?

Registration per training is $100 for individuals; $180 for organizations (up to two people).

Some scholarships are available - please fill out the scholarship application form here.
